Week In Geek- A Bunch of Stephen King Goodies & Seeing An Old Friend

Geeklings, it’s Monday which can only mean one thing… it’s time for a new Week In Geek. And there is lots to be excited about too. Monday Night Football returns tonight with two games but with only one game that really matters. WWE returns to Madison Square Garden tonight and tomorrow for the first Raw and Smackdowns there in almost ten years which is sure to be all types of awesome. And to top it all off, you get a fresh week of I Am Geek content.

I know things have been a little sparse over the last couple of weeks and that’s on me. Lots going on and I really need to sit down and take the time to write during the weekends. Life has just been a little bit busy but I’m looking to hunker down this week. I’ve got two reoccurring columns on the back burner, one I’m positive you’ll see this week and the other I’m like eighty percent sure you’ll see this week. I’m excited about both and hope you guys are too even though I have done very little to hype what the content will be. The arrogance of me just wanting to be excited because it’s something new I’m writing. But you really should be… just saying.

In the meantime though, let’s kick off this week the only way we know-how. By hyping things that’ll make the work week suck just a little bit less. Here we go!

Image result for the instituteThe Institute by Stephen King- It’s new Stephen King book week! The happiest of happy times when you can go to the book store (if they even still exist) or Amazon and purchase a new work of fiction by Uncle Stevie. I’m going to be working double-time this week to finish reading Lovecraft Country (a book I’m thoroughly enjoying) so I can jump right into this one. New Stephen King books are like Christmas morning. The Institute seems to be King’s take on the X-Men, a group of kids with powers are brought to a place where it is believed those powers can be harnessed. But this is Stephen King, nothing is ever what it seems. These children are taken against their will making the Insitute a lot less like the Xavier School For the Gifted. King has a long-standing tradition of writing fantastic child characters. Books like It, The Long Walk, The Body are all examples of his ability to capture the voice of the young and some of my all-time favorite King stories. Any time we can get a new Stephen King book it automatically becomes the best part of the week. Hands down.

Doctor Sleep- And here you were thinking that we would only get one Stephen King news bit for the week. Nope, we’ve got more. Over the weekend we got the second, and final, trailer for the upcoming Doctor Sleep… you know, the sequel to The Shining. This thing looks pretty fantastic. Directed by Mike Flanagan, who only gave us such gems like The Haunting of Hill House and Oculus, who just so happens to be a massive Stephen King fan himself. I’m really happy with what I’m seeing from these trailers. Everything is purposely vague but there is no denying this stories connection to The Shining. Considering how much King hates the original film of The Shining, I personally love how Flanagan recreated all the footage of the Overlook that we see. I was a big fan of the book and thought it did a wonderful job of picking up with Danny Torrance all these years later. Mike Flanagan tends not to make bad pictures either which has me even more ready for this come October.

Jesse PinkmanJesse Pinkman- Over the weekend Aaron Paul posted a picture of what is believed to be our first look at Jesse Pinkman in the upcoming El Camino Breaking Bad movie to his Instagram page. Needless to say, I freaked the eff out. There is zero context behind the picture other then Paul saying “Hello old friend” which is enough to get me speculating. Is it me or does it seem that Jesse is either wearing a yellow hazmat suit or in the confines of Gus’s meth lab? He’s also got short hair which leads me to believe that this picture could be a flashback within the movie. Last we saw him he was racing away with a mess of hair and a beard. Of course, the minute any Breaking Bad fan hears the term flashback immediate speculation goes to the return of Walter White which is a natural response. All I know is if the next month or so is full of Aaron Paul dropping these little teasers and no full trailer then I’m going into October 11th all types of hyped up. Hell, I’m all types of hyped up right now and have been circling random Breaking Bad episodes for the last couple of weeks. Just to touch base with some old friends. I should just commit and start the great re-watching already.

There you have it Geeklings, a little bit of awesome to help get you through the week. What are you looking forward to the most? Feel free let loose in the comments or throw me a line over at Twitter @iamgeek32. In the meantime, I’m prepping new columns for the week and hoping my fantasy football teams can pull some miraculous comebacks. Looking at you Dree Brees and all of the possible points. I’ll see you guys tomorrow!
