Another Monday, another jam-packed Week In Geek.
How we doing out there Geeklings? There have been tons of comings and goings over the last few days. I celebrated a birthday (thank you, thank you), Spider-Man rejoined the MCU (happiest of happy days), I got a Switch, The Institute by Stephen King is demanding all of my free time, but so is my Breaking Bad re-watch (almost halfway through season four). There just isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. And because of that, we’ve been a little light on the writing as of late. Sorry, but know that I’m doing all these things in the name of I Am Geek.
Not to mention, I have a wedding that’s a month away so prepare yourselves, things might get a little sparse for a while but we’ll end the year strong. That I promise you.
Let’s focus on the present though which makes doing a brand new Week In Geek a hell of a lot easier. And I like easy. Easy like Sunday morning. Easy peasey lemon squeezy. Easy…rider?! You get the point. Let’s kick this thing off because there’s a ton to look forward to, starting with…
New York Comic Con- It’s my favorite time of the year! That’s right, it’s time for New York Comic Con which means yours truly is going to have the best two days imaginable. It’s my geeky super bowl. Or geek Christmas. Or maybe the best way to start the countdown to the wedding. Either way, I’m pumped. I’ll be heading over to the Javits Center Friday and Saturday, for those going hit me up on Twitter and maybe we can arrange a rendezvous, and I’m really hoping to get in on the Brian K Vaughan Image booth signing, the HBO Watchmen screening, and the Marvel X-Men panel. Those are my must hits. Outside of that it’s just soaking in the goodness and trying not to go broke in doing so.
Mr. Robot season 4- Despite how bittersweet it is, you guys know I’m a sucker when a creator gets to end their series on their own terms. This fourth season of Mr. Robot is case and point. Sam Esmail will be bringing his hacker, world commentary, brilliant series to an end and USA was willing to give him a handful of extra episodes to make sure it’s told correctly. What does the show have in store for us with this final season though? It seems that Elliot and Mr. Robot have reached a truce. Elliot has seemingly undone the 5/9 Hack. Angela might have some White Rose issues and White Rose might have some time travel issues… maybe? And everyone’s favorite cop Dom, is now working against her will for White Rose. All this will be set against a Christmas backdrop, and will only span a few days, meaning that we are going to get allllll the tension in this final season. I for one can’t wait to see how Elliot’s story concludes. I’ll be covering reviews over at Fan Fest News as I try to break down this final season. I will miss Mr. Robot but am so excited for the Breaking Bad like tension it provides.
Joker- This one kind of crept up on us but the Joker will see it’s theatrical release start this week and things are a bit, uh, murky. After receiving a massive standing ovation and the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival it seemed that Joker had made a serious stake as an Oscar contender. The Rotten Tomatoes score was through the roof and those who had seen the film were praising it as an evolution of the superhero film as well as just being an innovative movie. Things have slightly soured since. The Rotten Tomatoes score has balanced out with more critics getting to view the movie, now sits at a 77%, but it’s the court of public opinion that might hurt Joker the most. In today’s environment where there seems to be a mass shooting every other week, there are some who believe that Joker is a dangerous movie. Dangerous in the sense that it advocates or promotes a rationale where if you’re bullied or can’t make it on your own that you should turn to violence. Whether or not this controversy hurts the film is yet to be seen, but I don’t like the feeling that I get when I see the trailers. I feel unclean and sort of upset/disturbed… in a bad way. I want to see Joker but I’m not sure if I need to see it in the theater. Here’s hoping that it doesn’t become a propaganda piece.
Stranger Things 4- As if we didn’t know this was happening but Netflix finally announced season four of Stranger Things through the use of one very creepy teaser. A creepy teaser that implies that this next season will take place… within the Upside Down?! As much as I love Hawkins, I think it’s time to dedicate a season to an Upside Down adventure and it feeds into a working theory of mine. One that I will share with you… tomorrow. Oooooooh, nothing like generating interest for future columns. What can I say, I’m a master.
There you have it Geeklings, a full week with a bunch of awesome stuff ahead. What are you looking forward to the most? Sound off in the comments or throw me a line over on Twitter @iamgeek32. Lots to look forward to and I can’t wait to share it all with you guys. NYCC here I come!
