Week In Geek: Oscar Nominations, New Pops for 2017, and the Last Jedi

Is it just me or did everyone have an awesome Monday? I hate to brag about things like that, especially because it’s Monday, buuuuuut I’d be lying if I said today wasn’t pretty bitchin’. I’ll get into some of the pop culture reasons down below but I’ll stick with the superficial ones for now. For starters Funko sent me a free Star Wars Smuggler’s Bounty box because I’ve been a loyal subscriber to the Marvel Collector’s Corp. How awesome is that? I got myself a pretty good haul too.

Any day you get free Pop items is a great day. Especially when that day kick starts the week. Oh happiest of happy days! Now I’m conflicted though as I’m wondering if I should start subscribing to this box. I mean, this is the year of Star Wars for me and it comes with some pretty stellar swag. Ugh, help me Geeklings. What would you do?

While you think about that though why don’t we break down this week’s Week In Geek because there is tons of awesome coming at ya this week. We’ve got the return of The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow as well as the final Resident Evil movie. That right there is enough to wet any geek’s pallet but there’s more. So much more. Time for the list!

I was constructing my list for today and happened to go on Faceyspace to see this gem. December seems so far away (could we at least have summer before we get excited about December?) but Star Wars Episode VIII is getting closer. I love the title for this film and the use of the red lettering as it implies a darker path for this new trilogy. Admit it, Star Wars is at it’s best when the tales get darker. Just look at Rogue One and Empire for further proof. Does the release of the title mean a trailer is close? Hopefully. There was a three week difference between The Force Awakens title announcement and the first teaser trailer so I feel it’s okay to be optimistic about this. I can wait three weeks. Can you guys? If you can’t, check out Fan Fest News as I got the most awesome task of breaking down just who could be the last Jedi (told you it was a good day). You can check that out here.

They’re so much fun to see the vindication of the things you love. For fans it’s a great feeling to see something you’re passionate about be recognized and when that thing loses it’s fun to spout off about how it got robbed. It’s the gift that keeps on giving really. Tomorrow will see the nominations for this years Oscars and I’m hoping for some surprises. Clearly movies like La La Land and Manchester By the Sea will see a lot of love but what’s going to sneak in? Could Deadpool get a Best Picture nom (how freakin’ cool would that be?!) or maybe Captain America: Civil War? One has to believe that the Oscars will show super hero movies love at some point, right? I also take sick enjoyment of seeing who gets snubbed. Not that I don’t want to see awesome performances recognized but I love bitching about how the Oscars (or other shows) get things wrong. It’s a great for discussion purposes.

Image result for royal rumble 20173. The Royal Rumble- Hands down the Royal Rumble is my favorite wrestling event of the year because it’s so simplistic in nature. Thirty guys enter the ring and if they get thrown over the top rope they’re eliminated. Winner gets a championship match. That’s it.  It’s fun to watch, especially if the crowd is heated, and leads to all types of in ring drama while making me feel kind of nostalgic in some ways. Don’t ask me to explain it but it just is. On top of that we always have a pretty good viewing party with a betting pool, so the Royal Rumble is the gift that keeps on giving. If I was to pick a winner for this year (and its seems more difficult then years past) I think I’m going to lean on the return of Finn Baylor. Then again, what do I know. I had the Packers/Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Funko 2017 Items– So Funko totally blew up my Instagram feed today with images of their new 2017 Pops and while my heart screamed with geekish glee I could still hear my wallet groaning with expected fear. But I can’t help it. There’s soooooooooooo many awesome items. No, seriously. There are so many items. We’ve got Mr. Robot, Parks & Rec, new Lord of the Rings (that Gandolf!!! That Balrog!!!), Reservoir Dogs, along with Space Jam, Twin Peaks, Alias, and so many more. You see what I’m talking about? I love Funko as they continue to put out amazing products but I’m starting to wonder if they want to bankrupt me. If they keep releasing items like this I’m going to be out on the street with enough Pops to build a little fort out of. I mean, it sounds epic but Hudson the Cat is not meant for street life.

There you have it Geeklings! A pretty full week ahead. What are you looking the most forward to? Sound off in the comments below or you can find me on Twitter @iamgeek32.
