Geeklings, I just spent over an hour writing a preview column for the upcoming season of Better Call Saul for Fan Fest News. It’s kind of a milestone column for me considering that when I was hired by Fan Fest one of my first writing gigs was covering Saul. It was my first taste of reviewing television shows and I like to believe that over the course of these last two years I’ve become a better writer and better reviewer. It all comes with experience, but Better Call Saul will always be the first and because of that will always hold a special place in my heart. Hell, I keep a Saul Goodman pop vinyl at my desk at work to remind/drive me to write more. Kind of a keep the drive alive type motivator.
With that being said, I’m pretty mentally exhausted. That review took a lot out of me, had a hell of a time trying to find the right avenue to begin, so my writing energy levels are a little low right now so I thought I’d spend a little bit of time catching you up with some of the comings and goings here at I Am Geek. There have been some pretty exciting developments as of late.
Like this past Thursday where I got to be a guest judge for a cosplay contest representing I Am Geek. Let me tell you guys something, there was something ridiculously exciting hearing an announcer introduce me as “Kevin Carey from I Am Geek“. I don’t know how to explain it, but it made it all real. This little site that has been kicking for three years now, as an excuse for me to geek out with a larger audience and evolved into a way of life for me. This has been one of the most rewarding creative endeavors of my life, and I’m thankful for this site every day. I love the fact that it exists and has opened a number of different doors for me. Doors like judging a cosplay contest.
A local comic book shop by me, Andriod’s Amazing Comics located in Sayville, NY, was hosting a cosplay contest with some kickass awards and their owner Anthony asked if I would be a judge, it was an easy yes. I was joined by Jess and Bob from the Talking Comics podcast and together we braved the heat, talked/interviewed some cosplayers, and had an overall awesome time! All the participants brought it and it was clear to see by character choice and the amount of work put in, that these cosplays were passion projects. It’s always an incredible feeling to be surrounded by people who are passionate with what they’re doing. It gives a buzz to the event and just makes it special. Talking with Anthony it looks like next year’s contest will be even bigger and it’s exciting to be a part of something like this. Supporting local geekery. A super cool thing to add to the resume and an even better experience.
Also if you’re local, go to Android’s Amazing Comics! The guys down there are super awesome and the shop is fantastic. These guys know their stuff and they’ll do you good. Trust me.
Elsewhere, I’m currently working on a new project with part-time poster Tiffani Bennett, that we’re super excited for you guys to see once we’re ready to release it. It might take some time because it’s a new adventure for both of us but hopefully, the end product will be something you guys enjoy. I know I’m looking forward to it. Be sure to keep your eyes open.
Other than that, it’ll be business as usual here at I Am Geek. Back tomorrow with a brand new Week In Geek and I’ve got some column ideas for the rest of the week. Just want to keep bringing you guys new content and a reason to be excited. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday Geeklings and I’ll see you later for the rest of the week! Many huzzahs!
