Geeklings, a very Happy New Comic Book Day to you all! We did it, we made it through Endgame! I hope everyone was able to experience it without spoilers because… man. That was something. I know some of you have yet to see it and I won’t spoil anything that happened here, but you really need to get on it folks. I’m dying to start talking about this movie but I refuse to ruin it for anyone. That’s not the I Am Geek way. But seriously, holy crap right?! Okay, okay… moving on.
I’d instead like to call your attention to the fact that this week sees the first Saturday in May, and you know what that means. It’s time for Free Comic Book Day or the best comic-related holiday ever! This is the time for you to head out to your local comic book store and show some love. Most LCBS have amazing deals, maybe even some signings and most importantly… free comics. And this year we’ve got new issues of Deadly Class and a prelude of the upcoming Absolute Carnage event heading towards Marvel. Plus a ton more. Free Comic Book Day is your opportunity to support your local comic supplier and let them know that you’re here for them. Get on that and celebrate the holiday in style!
Before Saturday, we have Wednesday to look forward to and that means new, non-free comics, to read! Two comic book related days this week, what a time to be alive. Let’s get right to this week’s Pull List because there are some books you need to be reading. Starting with…
DCeased #1– Anytime Tom Taylor is allowed to decimate the DC Universe it means great things for readers. You may recall a small series called Injustice that saw Superman turn into a ruthless dictator and the death of many, many of your favorite DC heroes. Commonly in heartbreaking fashion. Well, it seems like enough time has passed since Injustice and Taylor is at it again. This time with a new Elseworlds story that sees a zombie-like virus rip through the DC Universe. I won’t get into the specifics of how that virus begins as I feel it’s a lot of fun and quite the social commentary, but this first issue sets the tone for mayhem pretty deftly. That last page alone is enough to make you scream for more. The DCeased mini-series is sure to push our emotional limits and find some really creative, soul-crushing ways to kill off some of our favorite DC heroes. Not to sound like a real sicko, but I can’t wait. This isn’t a book used just for shocks and death. Taylor writes each character with care and respect to really make it hurt. Side note, can we get a Tom Taylor Green Arrow series? Cause I need that in my life.
War of the Realms #3– I can’t get enough of this series. The amount of fun dripping out of the pages of Jason Aaron’s epic event is immeasurable. I’ve especially enjoyed that there doesn’t seem to be much down time here. This series has been riddled with a sense of urgency as Malekith and his army are sitting pretty in England having taken earth off guard. Now our heroes are spread out, given separate missions, as they hope to strike the first real blow to Malekith. Daredevil is looking to pick up the pieces of the Rainbow Bridge. Cap, Spidey, Wolverine, and Luke Cage are searching for Thor who has been battling ice giants since this event began. While others are looking to shut down the Black Bifrost. This book is bananas in all the best ways. It’s rock n roll in a comic book.
Batman #70- The “Knightmare” arc is over and Batman is free, and booooooooooy is he pissed. Like super pissed. Pissed to the point where he’s laughing while busting skulls. That’s a special kind of Batman if you ask me. Freed from his nightmare cellar in Arkham, Batman is now looking for Bane but he’s fighting through an army of rogues to get him. This issue reminded me a lot of the “I Am Suicide” arc as King continues to paint the symmetry throughout his massive run. A brand new arc starts here and things are heating up. Batman becomes the nightmare and woe to anyone who steps in his way.
Savage Avengers #1– What if I told you guys that the team of Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato Jr were bringing you an Avengers title that had a team of Wolverine, Venom, Elektra, and Punisher? You would say to me “Holy crap, Kevin! How could I read this?!” Well, Geeklings, Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato Jr. are writing an Avengers title that has a team of Wolverine, Venom, Elektra, and Punisher…
Green Lantern #7- I can’t believe I don’t mention this book more. I have failed you Geeklings. I’m going to try and make up for some lost time though. Grant Morrison’s Green Lantern run has seen Hal Jordan make the ultimate sacrifice, and that sacrifice has seen him trapped inside his own power ring. Within that power ring though is a whole new universe. Whaaaaaaaaat?! Here’s the thing though, that universe will collapse on itself if the power ring loses, uh… power. No good. Grant Morrison is a master of complex storytelling and seven issues into his Green Lantern run things are getting all types of crazy.
Honorable Mentions- Paper Girls # 28, The Walking Dead #191, & Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1
There you have it Geeklings, all the best books to get your mitts on this week. As always, if you feel like I’ve left anything off of this week’s Pull List sound off in the comments. If you’d like to talk more comics with yours truly then you can find me over on Twitter @iamgeek32 where the comic conversation is damn near endless. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a tremendous Free Comic Book Day on Saturday. Be safe and throw that love to your local shops. I’ll see you all here next week. Happy reading and many huzzahs!
