2017, What To Expect

You know, we’ve spent the last week and a half (maybe two weeks?) talking about all the things that made 2016 awesome. Obviously we omitted the very George RR Martin nature of the year (there may not have been a Red Wedding but that didn’t stop everyone from dying) and focused more on the things that were worth celebrating. As I’ve stated before it was a great year for pop culture and there was plenty to celebrate. Early drafts of the list had me rotating a number of things in and out, and it pained me not to include things like BoJack Horseman and Mr. Robot (especially since Mr. Robot was probably the most fun I had reviewing a show ever) but that’s what happens when you make lists. You’ve got to make the tough choices. But none of those drafts included what comes after twenty sixteen, so I thought I’d take today and break down some of the things that we should be getting excited about for 2017.

One of the best feelings about the release of something new is the anticipation. That straight up need to watch, read, touch, experience, listen to, or immerse yourself in something. It’s what drives us as geeks. It’s those anticipations that make websites, like this one, tick. Anticipation is an endless assembly line of topics to be discussed. New trailers mean new conversations and new things to point out and dissect. New blurbs or teaser images allow us to speculate and wonder what could be coming. The Funko upcoming products page let’s us know that there are awesome pops on the way. These are all things that make the geeky universe go round, and it’s time we start to take a glance at what 2017 has to offer.

I mean take a quick look at this list (in no order)

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  2. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  3. Thor: Ragnarok (that’s just the Marvel Movies!)
  4. Justice League
  5. The Defenders (Netflix)
  6. Iron Fist (Netflix)
  7. Stranger Things season 2
  8. BoJack Horseman season 4
  9. Mr. Robot season 3
  10. Steven/Owen King novel Sleeping Beauties
  11. Star Wars: Episode VIII
  12. Geoff Johns DC Project
  13. Winds of Winter (for the love of God George!!)
  14. Stranger Things pop vinyls
  15. LOST pop vinyls
  16. Rick and Morty season 3
  17. Beauty and the Beast (what?! It looks incredible)
  18. Last of Us II
  19. Alien: Covenant
  20. Westworld season 2 (maybe, please?)
  21. Game of Thrones season 7
  22. Better Call Saul season 3
  23. Wonder Woman
  24. The Dark Tower
  25. Logan

See that?! That was me just rambling things off the top of my head. Twenty seventeen has so much promise to continue the trend of awesome pop culture events and movements that it’s hard to keep our heads in the clouds of 2016. At some point we’re going to have to meet these things head on, and why wouldn’t we? If you’re here on this website it’s because you have a love for pop culture and most things geeky (and I thank you for stopping by) so there has to be at least a few items that get your blood pumping like a cos-player in a wig shop (Dear Cos-Player readers, is this something that excites you? I was just kind of going for a witty example but not sure if I nailed it. Please report back in the comments).

My initial thought when writing this column was to break down a bunch of these things in order to start discussion and build anticipation, but as I was writing it I changed my mind. Yes, apart of it is laziness and due to the fact that I’ve worked a twelve hour day on four hours of sleep but the other part has to deal with the word anticipation itself. The theme for today’s column has been anticipation (this blog post brought to you be the letter”A” for…) and what better way to build that then just name dropping some things. Who knows, maybe you know all the things on the list or maybe you have to turn to Google to figure somethings out. Either way you’re starting to prepare yourself for a discussion. That anticipation is brewing and here at I Am Geek we’re going to get your through it.
