Geeklings, a happy if not sort of muted New Comic Book Day to you all. It’s funny, ironic funny not ha-ha funny, looking back at last week’s Pull List and seeing how much has changed in the short span of a week. Things are kind of tense and the world we’re living in right now isn’t the same world we were living in last Wednesday. And I know, some of you could argue that in the grand scheme of things comic books don’t really matter much, and I hear what you’re saying, but we’re on the cusp of something we’ve never experienced before. Social distancing is keeping many of us working from home or away from loved ones or from going out to places that were a part of the norm of everyday life. Places like the local comic book shop. A place that will be hit hard by all of the self quarantines.
Through my Twitter travels, I’ve been fortunate enough to see that so many LCBS are doing tremendous things for their customers. Whether it’s curbside pick up or actual home deliveries, your friends at the local comic book shop are going above and beyond to make sure that you’re entertained during this stressful time. These guys are awesome and you should be celebrating them and calling them out on social media. Because if you think about it, we need comics more than ever right now. People are going to get stir crazy and start to get that cabin fever. At least with some new comics, or old depending on your tastes, you’re able to mentally check out of your house/apartment and go on an adventure that allows you to stop thinking about if you have enough toilet paper or canned goods.
Be sure to thank your friends at the LCBS and recognize what they’re doing for you at a time when you can’t go to the store. Appreciate them and their efforts and the books they’re bringing. These guys are the real heroes right now.
Now, let’s jump into some comics starting with…
Outlawed #1- Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, and Nova might be my favorite trio of heroes in the Marvel Universe. No exaggeration. I’m tired of saying that these kids are the future of the MU and want to live in a world where they take that future by the reins. Outlawed comes directly from the pages of Incoming and presents us with a world where teen superheroes have been banned. No more. Thanks for everything but nope you’re done kids. Obviously, our teen heroes have some pushback on that, otherwise, this would be a lame story, and Outlawed sees how they respond. Something tells me that we’re building to some sort of Civil War like conflict between Marvel’s future and Marvel’s present. If you loved books like Champions or Young Avengers then this title is going to be for you. The Marvel Universe’s government is intervening and we all know that that doesn’t mean good things for our heroes.
Spider-Woman #1- If you’ve missed Jessica Drew, and not in the way where you missed her because you found out that she was secretly a Skrull but missed her in the way that she hasn’t had an ongoing series in some time, then I’ve got some good news for you. The team of Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez are here with a new Spider-Woman title for your eyeholes because what’s one more Spider title on the shelves? This book is priding itself on the fact that Spider-Woman will get to punch some bad dudes in the face and on a superficial level that sounds like a lot of fun but kind of a basic comic book. Ya basic! On a deeper level, there seems to be a larger mystery at play here as a group of baddies are trying to constantly blow Jessica up and she now has some sort of mysterious job. Sounds intriguing to me and who doesn’t love when a character returns to your shelves?
Robin 80th Anniversary #1- Well, well, well, look who is turning eighty. Can you believe the Boy Wonder is this old?! And what better way to celebrate this old bird than with an anniversary issue with a ton of different writers and artists. We’ve got Tom King, Jorge Jimenez, Marv Wolfman, Mikel Janin, Andy Kubert, Peter J. Tomasi, and so many more writing and drawing all the different versions of Robin over the last eighty years. If you came here to celebrate all the many versions of the Boy Wonder, including the poor bastard who was beaten to death with a crowbar and then exploded, then this is the book for you. Because what is Batman without a child sidekick that is always exploited and often killed in an attempt to hurt the Bat? Eighty years of comic gold is what!
Something Is Killing the Children #6– I don’t know why, but I thought this book was on a break for some reason. What a pleasant surprise for yours truly discovering it on today’s pull list though. I haven’t been shy about discussing how I’m a big fan of this series and issue six looks to broaden the horizon of the mythology of Something Is Killing… because the beast that we were introduced too at the start has been killed. But that doesn’t mean this comic has to end, in fact, it’s more reason for it to continue. We’ve got talking squid stuffed animals, monster caves, monster actions, monsters in general, a monster killing agency, and Erica Slaughter herself to explore. James Tynion IV has done such a tremendous job of world-building here and I can’t wait for more. Please read this book. Please. I promise you’ll dig it.
Batman #91- That’s right, I’m hitting you with two James Tynion books this week because as good ole’ JR used to say, business is about to pick up in Batman. We now know that the Joker, Riddler, Catwoman, and the Penguin all met with the Designer in order to come up with the ultimate crime to defeat Batman. We also know that after speaking with the Joker, the Designer had a change of heart and ended up dead. These things happen when dealing with the Clown Prince of Crime. Now things seem to be moving out of control and Catwoman has confessed her involvement to Batman who is not so happy about this. Turns out the ultimate crime involved robbing Bruce Wayne blind. Yikes. On top of that, the mysterious Punchline is lurking in the shadows waiting to make herself known and Harley Quinn is… well, Harley Quinn. Things are really taking shape here under this new creative team and I’m curious to see where we’re going. Can Batman forgive Catwoman? Is the Designer still alive? Who is Punchline? Is the Joker just playing everyone? Read Batman #91 for all your answers… or clues to answers.
Honorable Mentions (and there are a ton because we’re all social distancing)- Star Wars #4, Undiscovered Country #5, Jimmy Olsen #9, Captain Marvel #16, and X-Ray Robot #1
There you have it Geeklings, all the best books to get your mitts on this week. As always, if you feel like I left anything off this week’s Pull List be sure to sound off in the comments. If you’d like to talk more comics with yours truly then you can find me on Twitter @iamgeek32. In the meantime, please be safe and courteous out there. I know things are stressful and scary but we’ll get through this. We’ve got comic books after all. Happy reading and many huzzahs! See you all next week.
