Week In Geek- Godzilla v Kong, Mighty Ducks Return, & Invincible Arrives

Geeklings, are we ready for March 26th? Like seriously, check your souls, are you ready for March 26th?! Because March 26th isn’t just the last Friday in March, and no, I didn’t have to check a calendar to make sure that fact was true. March 26th isn’t just a made-up day of awesome. No, this day, this March 26th contains alllll the awesome. So much awesome in fact, you’ll be trying to figure out how to handle your day because between work, food, and all this awesome there will be some juggling to be had. That’s the truth. For reals. I wouldn’t lie to you about these things. I mean, what kind of credibility would that give the site if I just came here and openly lied to you. None. So, I choose to tell you the truth whether I think you can handle it or not.

Normally, March 26th is the day we celebrate my buddy Tim’s birthday but this year it looks like Tim is getting a ton of geekery for his day of birth and these are gifts that all of us can open. I think we should thank Tim for his birthday generosity. What a selfless dude bestowing an abundance of awesome upon us. I’d give you his social handles so you could all personally thank him but I’m pretty sure he’d break valuable fingers if I did, so, keep your thank yous to the comments below or you can share them with me on Twitter (@iamgeek32) and I’ll pass them along. Need these fingys for typing.

It feels like it’s been a while since we had a perfect storm of geekiness and this Friday looks to deliver in spades. Let’s look past the fact that we’re getting another new episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier and focus on the most obvious bit of awesomeness. Godzilla vs Kong is coming to HBO Max this Friday and I can hardly contain myself. Apart of me wants to spend the week watching all those classic old Godzilla movies in preparation but I still have two hours of the Snyder Cut to suffer through so there’s no way that’s happening. But one can dream.

The review embargo has lifted for Godzilla vs Kong and I saw one person describe the movie like the Fast and the Furious but with monsters and I can’t think of a more ringing endorsement than that. That’s exactly what I want from this film. I want Godzilla to look into the camera while exclaiming he lives his life a quarter-mile at a time while King Kong jumps through a skyscraper. Or something of the sort. I want monster mayhem. I want bananas, no pun intended, action. I want two giant monsters to beat the snot out of each other for my enjoyment. And this Friday, March 26th in case you forgot, I’m getting it.

Let’s start placing bets now because my money is on Godzilla to win this thing. Sorry Kong, you broke my heart in the Peter Jackson movie, come on, that scene as he slips off the Empire State Building?! Insert heart-breaking emoji here. But my money is on the Thunder Lizard. Hmmm, I think I’ll start a poll on the socials and you guys can vote. What fun!

After you get your monster on, or before, I’m not here to tell you how and when to view things, you might want to turn to Disney+ to get your nostalgia on. Who doesn’t love to dabble into a little bit of nostalgia from time to time? Maybe it’s with a song or maybe it’s looking at some old photos or maybe it’s tuning into Disney+ for the new Mighty Ducks television series.

What?!

Yep, that’s a thing that’s also arriving this Friday! Emilio Estevez returns as coach Gordon Bombay, what a tremendous name by the way, to coach/teach a whole new generation of kids that ducks. Fly. Together. Come on, look at this trailer and tell me it doesn’t make you want to grab the closest hockey stick while yelling “knuckle puck” before swinging.

To make this even better, if that’s even possible, last week we got a few photos of some older players coming back to help with the new batch of players. My heart… it’s so full. Sorry, didn’t see Pacey though. Not sure if he’ll be returning just yet but we all know that Disney money is just to sweet to turn down. I’d bank on him arriving in season two but for now allow this new Mighty Ducks series to do for hockey what Cobra Kai has done for karate.

Once you finish with that, if you’re not too exhausted from all the emotions and duck noises you’ve been making, then please turn your attention over to Amazon for some superhero greatness. Some animated superhero greatness in fact. At long last, Robert Kirkman’s Invincible is coming to our screens as season one of the animated series drops this Friday. This is another show where we’ll get the first three episodes on Friday and then switch to a weekly format afterward which is fine by me because it worked so well with The Boys and WandaVision. There’s a ton to be excited about here and the longer we can experience something fresh and unique and awesome the better. The only bummer is there are only eight episodes.

First of all, you all know Robert Kirkman from The Walking Dead, a show that refuses to die. The irony is rich. But he wrote other comics that weren’t about zombies. Comics like Invincible which is a coming-of-age superhero tale about a young boy who develops powers like his alien/superhero father. What ensues is a story that plays on the classic superhero tropes but also puts its own spin on that storytelling. There will be violence. There will be swearing. There will be some insane plot twists that will leave you shaken. And there will be some incredible voice work.

Seriously, the cast for this show is out of hand. You’ve got newly Oscar-nominated Steven Yeun playing our hero Mark Grayson/Invincible with J.K. Simmons playing his father. Then you’ve got some truly heavy hitters in Sandra Oh, Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Maximum Derek himself, Jason Mantzoukas, Zachary Quinto, Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen, Jon Hamm, Mahershala Ali, and Zazie Beetz. This show is stacked and might scratch a superhero itch you didn’t know you had.

What’s left to do other than to mentally prepare for March 26th? The day we get all the awesome… and celebrate my buddy, Tim. What are you looking forward to the most Geeklings? Be sure to sound off in the comments below or throw me a line over on Twitter @iamgeek32. Where else will you wish Tim a happy birthday? I Am Geek lives for weeks like this and we can’t wait to share all this craziness with you. See you on the other side Geeklings.
