Last night I woke up around four o’clock in the morning which was upsetting for a number of reasons. For starters I’ve been on this diet as of late since I haven’t done a very good job of eating properly, and with that diet I’ve been waking up at 5:50 to meet my sister and our friend Michael (hiiiiiiiii guys!!) to go for walks (they’re the best). Needless to say waking up at four in the morning when I have to be up in the not too distant future sucks my A. The second thing that had me feeling disgruntled was the fact that I had to go to the whiz palace, and I did what any self respecting human would do at four o’clock in the morning… I tried to convince myself that I didn’t have to go. Well, I did and after a three minute debate I removed myself from the bed to relieve myself. I don’t know about you fellow Geeklings but after I wake up to use the pots in the middle of the night I sometimes need a few minutes to adjust before falling back asleep. In that adjustment period I turned to FaceySpace so I could see if the Dr. Strange trailer had been uploaded by Marvel yet. Lucky for me it was!
Now I’m not going to pretend that I understood what I was watching, as a matter of fact only one eye was open which is a family trait passed down by many generations. If you want to understand the full effect, turn all the lights in the room off, cover one eye, look in the direction of your light source, and then turn the lights back on. Did you feel how immediate your eye shut? Almost as if it was trying to burrow inside your head? Yeah that feeling is coded deep within my DNA. Lucky right? Although it is quite hysterical to behold especially when you discover a new family member with it. This is all besides the point.
The point is there’s finally a Dr. Strange trailer for us to look at and I must say it looks very different from any other Marvel movie at this point. My immediate reaction was “man this reminds me of Inception except with mystical people and a bald Tilda Swinton” (who looks like quite the badass with a bald head). Plus it’s got The Cumberbatch (Khaaaaaaaaaaaaan…sorry) with various degrees of facial hair.
And then… I fell back asleep only to be awakened by Michael’s wake up call (thanks Michael!)Since that moment in the wee hours of the morning (or night. I guess it depends on who you are. I’ve always referred to those times as night even though it says morning in the title. I’m not going to change. It’s dark out. There for it’s night #lawyered) I went to work and didn’t watch the trailer again. Honestly I just watched it for the second time five minutes before starting this column, and I like to believe I have a better grasp on it now.
I’m still getting those Inception vibes (how could I not look at that imagery), there are various degrees of Cumberbatch goodness (from the ultra handsome to the very beaten up), and there was Mads Mikkelsen moving the world around with his hand (you may remember him from Hannibal). I still believe that this will be different then any other Marvel movie and I’m looking forward to see how it changes the landscape. Especially when you consider it’s following Civil War. I really enjoy how the trailer opens with “forget about everything you think you know”. Feels like some fourth wall breaking to me… Wait. Have you seen it yet? I’m sorry. I should have asked earlier. Here’s the trailer in case you were sleeping in the middle of the night and missed it.
I want to say that this is the first time I’ve woken in the middle of the night to watch a Marvel trailer but I’d be lying. I also awoke in the middle of the night (although this was more like two in the morningish) when they released the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War and wept as I watched it’s awesomeness. Maybe it was because I was tired or maybe it was because my eye felt like it was sown shut or maybe it was all of the above. Needless to say I’m starting to develop a pattern here.
So in closing, if by chance you happen to wake up in the middle of the night tonight to go pots or whatever it is you’re doing (hey, I don’t know you), stop, take a minute, and wonder… is Kevin watching a movie trailer some where right now? The answer to that question is a strong maybe.
See you Friday Geeklings! Enjoy the season premier of Orphan Black!
Total side note but this gif of Tatiana Maslany literally made my heart explode. Literally.
