Geeklings, a Happy Monday to you all! Here’s a fun fact, the Monday after the Super Bowl is the biggest sick day of the year. I think this is a true story. There is a chance that it’s something I heard once and am trying to pull off as fact, but I guess that’s part of the fun. Sure, I could just take a second and hop on Google and see if this little factoid is right, but I’m going to embrace my lazy on this. It sounds like something that would be true and that’s what we’re sticking to. Biggest sick day of the year… unless you live in Philadelphia where I suspect a number of people were out of work because they were in jail.
If you tuned in for the last football game of the season yesterday you got quite a bit more than just a good game. Looking back on it, I would say this Super Bowl had some of the strongest commercial showings in quite some time. Everything from the Dinkles and Morgan Freeman’s rap battle all the way to David Harbour continuing to prove why he’s exactly what the world needs right now, the commercials left me quite entertained. And, the game wasn’t half bad either with the exception of the Eagles winning. That really bites.
Football and commercials weren’t the only things we got yesterday though. No, yesterday we got a smorgasbord of trailers. A real buffet of new content that had me shutting up everyone in the room so I could hear what was being said. I take my trailers just as serious as the game. Unless the Giants are playing and then I catch up on everything later #stress.
It’s with these trailers that we kick open the door of this Monday and bring you a brand-spankin’ new Week In Geek!
1. Solo: A Star Wars Story– This one is kind of a two-parter. Last night during the game we finally got our first glimpse of this Han Solo origin story in the form of a teaser trailer. Then today on Good Morning America, we finally got ourselves a full trailer for the film. We went from having nothing for this movie to having two trailers in less than twenty-four hours. What’s the verdict? Color me pleasantly surprised. I’m still not entirely sold on the casting of Alden Ehrenreich as Han, not a fan, but the rest of the trailer had me intrigued. I was happy to see that they kept that kind of gritty cinematography that they used in Rogue One as it makes the galaxy look a little more rugged which would make sense considering this story is centered around a smuggler. There was tons of action, seeing the Falcon brand new was all types of exciting, and getting a younger look at Chewie made my heart happy. But if I’m being honest, Donald Glover stole the show as Lando. Dear god! How long before Star Wars fans start petitioning for a Lando standalone movie? And if so, can someone please sign me up?
2. Westworld Season Two Trailer- I found out that this was going to be a thing on Friday, yay Twitter, and I had been jonesing for it ever since. If you recall, I fell in love with Westworld pretty hard and I’ve been patiently waiting for season two to get here so I can start taking those deep deconstructive dives into the content of the show. This trailer didn’t give us a whole lot to go on, but did give us a piano version of Kanye West’s “Runaway”, but what we did get was enough to get the blood pumping. Revolution. The hosts have now become self-aware and understand that our world and their world are two entirely different things. With the way season one ended it would be easy to believe that Dolores will be the leader of this new revolution and the trailer’s voice-over doesn’t dissuade us from that train of thought. While not a lot is given away we can say that there is plenty of action as the humans and employees of Westworld look to fight for survival. Good thing we only have to wait until April to start getting some answers. Looks like there’s a re-watch in my future.
3. Avengers Infinity War trailer- When I heard there was going to be a new Infnity War trailer my interest in the Super Bowl rose through the roof. Trust me, it’s an easy sell to begin with. Food, beers, friends, and commercials. Of course, I’m going to be there. Now throw in a bit of that Marvel magic? Ain’t nowhere else in the world that I’ll be. My hopes for the new Infnity War trailer was just a few new scenes, nothing to overexpose the film, but enough to get me to geek out and scream at the television. What exactly did we get with this new Avengers trailer? Well, we get our first glimpse of Cap’s new shield, we see the Guardians walking off their ship (possibly on Earth?), Groot (!!!), Tony fighting with Doctor Strange, possibly a glimpse of Captain Marvel around the 11 second mark (maybe? Look closely), and hype. Tons and tons of hype. This trailer was perfect. Enough new footage to analyze without giving away the farm. Ugh, May can’t get here soon enough.
4. The Love Trunk by Linda Meigel- This edition of the Week In Geek isn’t all trailers though. Nope, our good friend Linda Meigel has just self-published her fourth novel and we over at I Am Geek are incredibly excited and happy for her. It is no easy task writing a book and Linda has been shelling out some fantastic stories for quite some time now. I have a very close relationship with Linda and we frequently throw writing ideas back and forth, and because of that I’ve been lucky enough to read a number of these chapters already and feel that Love Trunk is some of her strongest writing to date. With her latest release Linda looks to tackle the subject of love, but if you know the writing of Linda Meigel, then you know this won’t be a traditional love story. Love Trunk is a story that sees one character searching for redemption, another searching for himself in the pursuit of the perfect engagement, and the exploration of the darker sides of love.
